I first became aware of Gavin Russom last summer at PS1 where he performed as The Crystal Ark. The music, which combined Brazilian trance with Belgian techno, had the capacity crowd dancing en masse. Stream “The City Never Sleeps” below.
I dug up some tracks when I got home and it eventually led me to Black Meteoric Star, his solo minimalist project from 2006. The songs instantly reminded me of my recent trip through the dance clubs of Berlin. The track “Dawn” is a standout for it’s driving repetition, acid groove and perfect restraint. Stream it below. FYI – the first 40 seconds are white noise.
While searching for more on Black Meteoric Star, I came across a remix Gavin did of Midnight Magic‘s track “Beam Me Up”, stream it below too. This is legit disco. Midnight Magic deserves a post all their own. Stay tuned for that and keep an eye out for performances by Gavin in one of his many incarnations (he also performs as a member of LCD Soundsystem).
